Documentary Planning

Brief

Boomsatsuma are looking for a range of exciting short portrait documentaries to be included in an anthology collection titled ‘boom docs vol.1’. Your documentary should focus on one person and an aspect/s of their life. The length should fall between 3 and 5 minutes and include an interview and some form of B-role/GV or archive footage/photography.

With this mood board I want to show how I want my documentary to look and the tone it gives off. I want a lighthearted documentary, however, with the use of lots of close-ups with my interviewee I also hope to create a feeling of intimacy with them, this will help the viewer get engaged. I want a mix of bright striking colours and warm earthy/golden tones, this will be mixed throughout, with the majority being warm natural colours. During my editing process, I want to add random pops of bright colour to emphasize what the interviewee is talking about and add to the artistic feel of the doc, almost showing how creativity is random.

legal and ethical

  • I need to stick to ofcom rulings and youtube terms of service, as this documentary will be screened in bristol and shown on youtube.

  • Ofcom is a regulatory body that screens shows that are shown on television, when sticking to their rulings I need to avoid condoning any of the artists controversial views or hate speech. Ofcom takes complaints from the public, so I need to follow their guidelines to avoid complaints from them.

  • I do not want to represent the artist unfairly, so i will avoid defamation of character, slander or libel. I will also avoid condoning any talk of drugs or petty crime.

  • As I am also showing the artists work, I need them to sign a release form to get permission to show it. I also need to get model release forms for any one shown in the documentary, for use of their likeness.
