Contacting Artists

$abodi & Sylvie-Rose

$abodi and Sylvie-Rose are two bristol artists that have created an exciting blend of hip hop, rap and indie. This means we have lots of creative options when creating our music video. Having already contacted them, they are very open to any creative ideas the group has for the music video. This is great as the group can play around creatively and all contribute ideas to the topic. Due to this they are our first choice.

La Lune

La Lune are a Bristol-based indie-rock band, they have energetic music which would be great to have as a live performance in the warehouse we can use to shoot.

DROOGS

DROOGS are three bristol locals creating sweaty punk music that's perfect for a rough gig. This makes them a great choice for us as their high energy would work allow us to experiment a lot when creating a music video for them. As one of our group has already worked on a project with them before, we already have good communication and this will make it easy to co-operate with them in discovering what they want for the video.

Fre$h On The $cene

Fresh On The Scene are a bristol local rap collective, which artists working on group and solo songs. This means we would have a large catalogue of music to pick from when choosing which to shoot a music video. There would also be a large collection of creative ideas we can work with when we are creating a concept for the music video. Also, if availability means we cannot work with all the artists we will still be able to shoot due to the amount of artists in the group.

Selecting A Track

We have chosen 'My Angel Is A Witch' as this is the perfect mix of hip hop and indie for us to experiment with and create an engaging music video , blending aspects of hip hop culture with indie themes, which will be a diverse and interesting mix.

Music Video Inspiration

This is our main inspiration for our first concept of our music video for $abodi and Sylvie-Rose. We liked the idea of moving through a doorway to different locations .We thought we could use it to help emphasize the difference in the two artists voals as their music has different tones. We could also use this as a way to change locations from the warehouse in which we are shooting a live song with the artist's. This is because we can only shoot with them for one day , and wouldn't be able to change locations.

This is our secondary inspiration , its use of choreographed dance and pretty insert shots inspired us to include changes of location when we pass through our doorway (which will be a Tv). We want to shoot in multiple different locations with dancers, having them dance around our doorway. This will hopefully keep the music video interesting and refreshing . Pretty visuals will also help keep the viewer engaged, as they wont have to be watching just the gig inside the warehouse.

This is our third inspiration for our music video concept, we liked the idea of having our artists live performance displayed to viewers in the music video .  This will help provide some comedic relief and also.

First Concept Video

With this first concept video, we tried to use inspiration from all three of our references. The black chair is intended to be an old tv, which we can track live footage of their performance recorded at the warehouse. We can then cut to different locations, creating interesting, pretty visuals for the viewer, keeping them engaged. We can also use a creative, hidden cut to create the effect of zooming into the tv and into the warehouse performance in one clean take. All this will factor together along with the great music to hopefully produce an interesting music video that satisfies the artists e have as clients and their consumers.

Original Narrative

Our original narrative starts with a fade in to a living room, two people watching a Tv which is positioned centre frame. Footage of our artists performing in a warehouse is playing on the Tv, a slow zoom into the tv transitions into the warehouse location with the artists . After staying here for a bit we zoom back out of the Tv to reveal a different location , with the same two people watching the tv , however they are now dancing. This same camera transition through the TV to the artists then back to the dancers carries on through the music video . This will be used top keep a sense of consistency throughout the music video , but the constant location changes will keep the audience engaged. Especially if they are from Bristol ,as they will get to see and recognise different locations as the video carries on

Production Schedule

Shooting Schedule

These documents are our production schedule and shooting schedule, the first is used to plan the entire project, to know when our deadlines are and to make sure the entire group is working around the same schedule. The shooting schedule is used to help organise the group while we are shooting the music video, we know how long we should be spending on each location of the shoot and keep us on track.

Storyboards

I created these storyboards as a way to visually communicate with my team and the clients my artistic vision for our shoot, I want to use bright colours, bold silhouettes and interesting camera techniques to keep the viewer entertained and maintain their focus.

Shot Script

This is my shot script, I completed it up to the end of my section of the music video ( the first chorus ), it is used to plan the composition, lighting set up of a shot, and when it should come in relation to the song. To the right of it is. y lighting diagram, this is used to show how we will set up our lighting, we chose to use a locked-off camera on a tripod to capture GV, this would be something we could press record on and leave, for us to focus on our second camera. WE also used a gimble, which circled around the entire lighting set up to get moving footage, as well as capturing the shooting equipment in it, something I think helps add to the authenticity of the music video.

Risk Assessment for Shoots

These are our risk assessments for our shoots, they show possible risks, how likely and severe they are, then precautions we can take to help make the risks less likely.  When we first visited the studio it presented some technical challenges we would have to overcome , the area is very large , meaning if we wanted to create a large well lit space we would have to use multiple lights and think carefully about their placement , to optimise coverage.

My Raw Footage

With this shot, I used a tripod, MC composition and hard backlighting to light up a green screen behind our artist. I did this so I could replace the greenscreen with swirly background effects to hopefully create a magical feeling to the shot.

With this shot used natural lighting in the warehouse, a handheld camera and a 360 pan around the artist to create a dramatically lit shot, that starts in silhouette and slowly reveals the artist's face. I think this shot creates an ethereal , floating feeling, helped by the handheld camera.

In this shot, I used a wide composition, a gimble I held over my head and backlighting, with a wall lit with led's. I did this as it has a good balance of bright white lights and saturated coloured lights, I also like the composition showing a lot of empty space and equipment behind the camera.

Evaluation

This project put my time management skills to the test, as I feel like I bit off more than I can chew when it came to editing our footage. Starting the project I think I worked well with the group in discussing our options, I was able to effectively communicate with clients to organise shooting days and planning work was shared equally within the group. I didn't struggle with any planning work, I was able to think forward when it came to choosing shooting times and organising equipment. When it came to our 2 separate shoots, I think I worked well with my group by sharing ideas, I was able to handle camera and lighting equipment effectively. However, after viewing our raw footage I feel like we would have benefitted from considering how we can edit our footage. As we used hard lighting, smoke and coloured backlighting, this led to fewer options with colour grading. This was something I struggled with, spending way too much time on. When it came to editing, I consulted with the artists and interpreted their needs into my artistic style. I chose to hand draw animations on top of my footage, this was incredibly time-consuming, more than I had expected, which meant I missed the project deadline, rushing my drawing and leaving an inconsistent amount throughout the edit. This is a problem that could have been resolved if I had planned ahead and researched the time and skill level required to effectively animate. Other than animating and colour grading, I feel the editing process went smoothly, I was able to use different transitions like cutting on action, to create a concise edit, however, I would want to change the filter at the start of the video as I think it is off-putting. Overall, I think I was successful in delivering a product that fulfilled my client's needs, however, I feel my means to get there were stressful and unorganised.
